The Kirkpinar of Oil wrestling started in the year 1360 when the eldest son of Ottoman sultan Orhan Ghazi organized the first annual oil wrestling tournaments in Kirkpinar, a wrestling field "within Samona village" situated in nowadays Greece. After Balkan war of 1912 the place of the original Kirkpinar had to be relocated to Virantekke, now the Kapitan Andreevo/Kapikule checkpoint on the Bulgarian border. In 1924 the match moved to Edirne.

During the 636th KIRKPINAR, Edirne Agha (mc) Hüseyin Sahin agreed with Veyis Güngör (chairman of Türkevi Amsterdam) and Mohamed el-Fers (MokumTV Amsterdam) that they would unite their forces to promote this historical oil wrestling in Europe and the world. Together with Ahmed Akgül and Ilyas Keskin they realized in 1997 the first European Champion league in Amsterdam. No less than 22 television teams covered this first Amsterdam KIRKPINAR.
